A gusher at Vizag port
WHEN THE 2.50-lakh-tonne VLCC, Kanchenjunga, anchored off the Vizag port on January 19 to tranship nearly two lakh tonnes of crude, it was a significant development for the port. Apart from the fact that it was handling a VLCC for the first time, the eve nt could well mark the first step towards the port emerging as a major oil transhipment centre on the east coast.

Foreign-flagged dredgers must pay their dues
THE INDIAN National Shipowners Association (INSA) has approached the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) over the issue of non-payment of import duty on bunkers, stores, and so on, by the foreign- flagged dredgers and tugs.

Shipowners may miss LNG bus again
INDIAN shipowners seem to be missing the LNG bus for the second time. Going by the conditions stipulated by Petronet LNG Ltd in its global pre-qualification notice to charter LNG tankers issued last week, none of the Indian shipping lines qualify to part icipate in the bids.



Paradip port not ship-shape yet
PROPER WORK at Paradip port started only from January after the devastation caused by the supercyclone hit the port on October 29.

CII's overhaul plan for Kochi port
THE KERALA chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has, in a report on the Kochi port, highlighted the need for the port authorities adopting more customer-friendly measures. Such measures, according to the report, are important, not only t o reduce the idle time, affecting the port operations, but also to enhance the commercial viability, thereby enabling Kochi retain its major port status.

Transport planning - all roads lead to Natpac
IF THE AP Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, was able to get the World Bank commit huge funds for developing the rural road infrastructure in the State, some credit must also go to the Thiruvananthapuram-based National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac).
