CHENNAI, Jan. 26

TATA Consultancy Services, together with Web Health Systems Ltd, has launched a portal site dedicated to healthcare. Put together by Dr. Sumanth Raman, promoter of Web Health Systems, www.healthcentre.com, uses TCS' technology expertise.

Addressing the press at the site launch, Dr. Raman said: ``The Web site is intended as a repository of knowledge available with medical institutions, practitioners and professional books.''

On registration, an individual may log in using a password to interact with available doctors in particular areas of speciality and solicit opinions. However, prescriptions are disallowed so as to limit liability. Dr. Sumanth also clarified that the info rmation available on the site was not to be used as a substitute for actual medical consultation, but to merely complement it.

According to Mr. S. Ramadorai, Chief Executive Officer, TCS, ``TCS is responsible for the design, development, marketing and maintenance of the site. However, the joint effort will be a not-for-profit venture.''

Features of the site include an online book store, a drug index that provides information on generic drugs for doctors and healthcare information categorised under three sections: General health topics such as beauty care and home hygiene; alternative me dicine, that deals with medical streams such as ayurveda, siddha and yoga; and a health centre which gives information on common medical conditions such as acidity, amoebiasis and jaundice.

The site managers are in talks with insurance companies to further the interests of the site. However, Dr. Raman declined further comment.
